Thanks Bas for sharing that story. Your story nicely explains why information radiators like task boards, dashboards, etc are essential. They act as "opportunities to start conversations" just like the ice skating track or the bowling bag.

Bas,

The circle makes sense from a super macro-point of view. I'd be interested to hear about how you use this with the folks you work with.

I'm working on a similar concept that I'd love some feedback on. I'm trying to use a simple graphic to show a project soup to nuts:

I too am glad I found you during my project management surfing today. You are so spot on about how we don't all respond the same way to a communication catalyst...and from day to day, we, as individuals may respond differently to the *same* catalyst. So, in the realm of throwing something at the wall to see if it sticks, it's all about being creative in our approach and realizing that what worked well yesterday (or on that last project) may not work well today at all...so go with the flow :-).

Really enjoying your insight!

Hey Bas and Curt,

I want to add to the previous comment that I have expanded the presentation to compare Blue Ocean Strategy, Balanced Scorecard and team build up in one graph. This allows for avoidance of fragmented approaches. On Slide 19 I show the dynamics of the three managerial tools and the feedback among then using a social network analysis canvas.

I agree with Curt that we should avoid focusing on customers; an integrated and timely approach is far more rewarding.

Hey Bas again,

Talking about visualizing projects it is timely to mention that I published few hours ago a new concept of visualizing not only data, but text as well. The visualization allows for the monitoring of what seems on the surface distant and unrelated topics. In the presentation SNA of Blue Ocean Strategy I applied the concept of social network analysis (SNA) to study BOS. Amazingly, whether right or wrong I added a new dimension to BOS because of this visual approach

I am writing this because the same approach is extensible to projects and their visualization. Bas, you sketch well, but I do not. That is why I use the SNA to save me.

If interested, the link is

I think this is a fascinating approach, because in general when discussing project timelines they focus on the customer much more than the business working on the project. Really, the aspects that apply to the business are ultimately the most important metrics for success.

Great, Bas
I would add the transition state on the graph. Also, I would consider flipping the arrow so that the transition state would be at the top

Just fancy ideas, I know
