Last week it dawned on me. With the concept of “mindful communication” I have found my unifying idea. The idea that is at the center of my thinking. I think. To be clear: I didn’t “invent” the concept or the name. I am still searching for the original source.
Short video in which I explain the concept of mindful communication.
This basically connects everything I have been writing about:
- the use of metaphors
- communicating within a multi-cultural environment
- resilience in teams by diversity (multiple frames of reference for effective problem solving)
- reasoning and dealing with partial information
- the use of information and minds in OODA loops and Social OODA loops
- use of feedback for effective communication
- creating a shared systems view for team synchronization
- our mindset on information and event distribution determines the effectiveness of our behavior
- how our group affiliation is used to create an opinion of us
- how PMs behave to fit in the view people have from our profession
- how personal branding is a publication of your own frame of reference
Even the central idea of my book “Surprise! Now You’re A Software Project Manager” supports the notion of mindful communication: use stakeholder analysis to find out what people really want (stakes) and use feedback (reports, prototypes, presentations) to synchronize expectations and reality.
Wow.
Exciting.
Awesome.
Hello Bas,
I do not know if I am qualified to respond to this post! However; the challenge now is to put your connected ideas on a simple diagram
Hi Ali, you are more than qualified
good idea. I’ll try to make some kind of mind map.

Hi Baas, I listened to Mindful Comm. It was a good reminder that we need to listen to what others have to say. And, I especially like the part that you can get their true thoughts in informal settings, like by the water cooler. If I may, please, I wish to contribute that oftentimes, I have found body language & facial expressions to be very useful too.
Hi Rose,
Thanks for your kind comment. Yes, body language and facial expressions are very very important. Thanks for bringing that up.
This is the reason why I create small videos instead of just writing. (and also to train myself in that
)
I’ll will add it to the list of topics to discuss.
This is undoubtedly profoundly true!In this microwave communication age, critical attention should be paid to project communications so as to increase project success.
