@Bas No problem. Actually one of my UI bibles (Seth Godin's "The Big Red Fez") says that for UI the number of things should only be 1, which is very harsh but very helpful as well.

@Andrea Thanks, I am glad you like it! The PoP philosophy is something we have come up with to solve the 500 line Gantt charts. It dovetails with several other good ideas including Management by Objective (MBO)where each of these seven things is owned by the smart people on your team. It is kind of cool to see this happen because a PM becomes more a project orchestrator at that level.

Diwant, I never heard of the PoP Philosophy before... I like it. Less overwhelming, easier to jump into work, when you don't feel inundated by a billion little tasks (death by a thousand cuts!).

@Diwant - Thanks for the link. This reminds me of the user interface design classes I got years ago: never provide a user with more than 5/7 options :) yeah, makes sense: never provide a PM with more than 7 options/tasks/things to monitor :)

@GeePawHill - Thanks for dropping by... and you just got yourself a new subscriber to your blog. Excellent stuff! And anyone with Fluent Self in the blogroll is worth checking out :)

Excellent post, Bas.

I think our embodied nature hides from us a lot. The brain each of us has is an actual physical brain, with many strange and remarkable capacities. It's not an abstraction, still less a generalized "problem-solver". Thinking on how we fit best into the physical and other contexts is at the heart of what I've been calling situated geekery.

Bas, this is a perfect post for me to bring up PoP Project's philosophy. Keep the project divided into only seven sub projects. Instead of 300 line Gantt charts, if you wake up every day to see the status of seven pieces, life will be a little less noisy.

Here is a little support for our idea: http://paradigmpop.com/node/46
