Hi AJ,
I agree with your example. However, if you said "making coffee, no need to plan". It's weird. This depends on how is the coffee? A drinkable coffee or the best one? Also depend on the type of coffee you want to make. Think of those things, do you still believe no need to plan when making coffee? Even for 1 person, even a small project, even just a small task, you should have a plan. But sometime, you just get the plan in your mind and start with it, it doesn't mean you don't have to plan. :(

Hi all, I would say it all depends on the project. IF you're making coffee, no need to plan. If you're hosting a party and you're making coffee for 50 people, plan a bit. If you're planning a wedding, you need detail planning.

Size and complexity is the key factor, but unfortunately most PMOs will try to adopt one method for all their projects :-(

This is such an excellent overview on the choices between Agile or Plan Driven project management. I've seen PM's who spend all their efforts on defining a detailed project plan and expect nothing to change and everyone involved to adhere to it only to find something goes wrong and the whole plan falls apart.

I think finding a balance between the two is the way to go!

Great article.
