When people notice that this blog is about Project LEADERSHIP, they always ask about the difference with Project MANAGEMENT. In this clip I’ll give it a shot; explaining the difference between project management and project leadership as I see it.

Hi,
An interesting topic which should lead to some good debate.
From my perspective as an Interim Program Manager I can say those Project Manager’s who are not also Project Leaders are those who end up with the failed project.
In my mind successful project management is all about leading the team, taking the big decisions and being ultimately responsible. And surely leadership is all about taking the big decisions and being responsible for them.

In my opinion, project management is to plan, to organize, to measure and to track issues based on certain methods. Yes, it’s dependent on the organization and the methods you use.
Project leadership is about getting people to follow your vision of the project. I disagree, it’s not independent. It’s dependent on you and people involved in your project.

Hi Martin and Susan, thanks for your comment.
@Martin, I think we agree.
Perhaps I should be more clear. What i mean is that you are independent, you (the PM/PL) are operating within your own circle of influence. It is more about being able to have the initiative. Hope this makes sense.
i think project management deals with many issues including the team issues but leadership deals with only issues related to team performance .
Hi,
Project manager is the person who follows all processes set to achieve the project goals but project leader provide the lead and right direction to team.
People accept him from their within as their leader and consider him as thier role model and feel that in his absence team will miss the direction and may be mislead.
People have faith in leader and his decisions whereas manager’s decisions are bound to be followed.
Thanks for the comments.

Hello,
thanks for the post,
Some people perform their PM being good from management and adquiring the leadership side and others perform the work from leadership to management. It depends of the personality of the PM.
nevertheless “they need both”,
Hello Bas, based on my experience and several sessions organized on this very topic with PMI France-Sud, I wrote the attached post:
