The end of a year is always a special time. So, asking yourself questions should be allowed around this time… I hope… because I did…

I asked myself: “What are the 3 postings from 2008 you are most proud of?”

Yes, this is a special episode of Proud Postings.

Introducing The Fish Pond

Globalization and technology have introduced more diversity, more dynamics and more interdependencies than ever before. This provides project management, and management in general, with a challenge. How to survive in this environment? Together with dr Ali Anani, I took on this challenge in the first months of this year in an attempt to provide some structure and some answers for management practitioners.

We wrote a series of postings all based upon the same metaphor: The Fish Pond. This article is an introduction to these postings.

25 Ways Project People Can Train Their Mental Flexibility

For me personally, the real eye opener this year is the notion that EVERYTHING surrounding management, leadership and running organizations in a changing environment, comes down to the same thing: your innerworld. The cause of problems, and also the solutions, are all mind stuff. That’s is why it is important to create and maintain mental flexibility.

This article describes 25 ways to train your mental flexibility. But almost every single item is linked to a “regular” project management topic. It is this connection I really want to emphasize in this post.

The Four Dharmas Of Project Management

We should be getting PMs using all three parts of their brain (left, right and heart). We need to educate ourselves as Project Managers. But not in new checklists or new procedures. We need to learn the fundamentals, the “why’s”. It will last longer.

This year, I learned that you cannot jump from the PMBoK directly to topics like “mental flexibility” and “emotional intelligence”. I am sorry to tell you, but most people cannot make that jump that fast. A path to “project enlightenment” has to be defined. With this article I am outlining a training route, using the Buddhistic “Turnings of The Wheel Of Dharma” as a metaphor.
