Good article Bas. I think the offshoring industry needs more frameworks to 'make offshoring work'. The industry is still in 'pioneering phase', especially for SME's and success can be enhanced by following your list. I have tried to summarize what I experienced in 'the 5P's of offshoring', maybe interesting to read for people here: http://bridge-outsourcing.com/en/offshoring/wondered-key-success-factors-offshoring

Nicely written, Bas.......

But if you think about it, aren't these rules pretty much applicable to onshore project teams as well?

I am originally from the Boston area and trying to communicate with someone from East Texas poses no less a communication problem than dealing with New Delhi or Jakarta.

And originally coming from the North, it is very difficult to work with people native to Florida, Georgia or some of the other southern states in terms of work ethics.

But the bottom line remains- aside from various cultural quirks, people are people and having lived and worked internationally for well over half of my 40+ years of work experience, I've learned that if you treat people the same as you'd want to be treated, you will be at least 80% of the way to success.
